I do think though that for the "business" serious person a professional logo is the only way to go. If you plan on building a business around your blog then a professional logo will help you establish trust and build credibility instantly. Of course not everyone can afford this route as you mentioned, but after going through the processes mentioned above, I would also start building a marketing plan and a budget around this. As things start to grow the professional logo should be in the budget asap.
